Southern Aviation, home of the Bunbury Flying School

General aviation (CASA)

All General Aviation (GA) flight training in Australia is regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and as such the minimum training requirements and licence structure is standardised for all flying schools. However this does not mean that all flying schools are the same. Further information about CASA can be found at www.casa.gov.au

Student Pilot - General Flying Progress Test (G.F.P.T.)

This primary phase of training is where you learn about basic aircraft handling and radio procedures. Initially your lessons will be with an instructor but when you reach the required standard your instructor will send you for your first Solo which is an exhilarating flight remembered fondly by most pilots. After that some of your lessons will be with an instructor (dual) and some will be solo consolidation for you to practice what you have learnt either in the circuit or in the training area.

The required theory for this stage of flying is quite straightforward and most people find that they can study at home with text books designed for this. From time to time we run short theory courses here at the school on weekends or weeknights. You need to sit one multi-choice exam called ‘Basic Aeronautical Knowledge’ (B.A.K) prior to undertaking your G.F.P.T.

Once you have passed the G.F.P.T. you can carry passengers within ten nautical miles (about 18km) of Bunbury Airport and also within our training area with extends about 7 kilometres North of Harvey and across to the coast. You are now qualified as a Student Pilot with Passenger carrying privileges.

Approximately 20 hours of training at $200.00 per hour (Cessna 152)$4000.00
DAME Aviation Medical examination$154.00
CASA Medical Charge$130.00
Books$100.00
Flight Test, CASA Fees etc$200.00
Estimated Cost to gain G.F.P.T.$4484.00

Private Pilot's Licence (P.P.L.) - Navigation Training

Now that you know the basics of handling an aircraft it is time to move to a larger and faster aircraft to learn the art of navigation. You will conduct your navigation training exercises around the wheat belt region of W.A and the routes will vary depending what sort of airspace you wish to have endorsed on your licence. For example Jandakot is a GAAP airport and needs to be added as a specific airspace in your log book.

The Private Pilot Licence (P.P.L.) theory includes three main areas: Navigation, Meteorology and Flight Rules and Procedures. This exam is a multi-choice cyber exam conducted on-line at the school and results are available immediately.

The P.P.L. flight test can be conducted once you have reached the required standard and passed the PPL examination. After passing the test you can hire an aeroplane and fly yourself and passengers anywhere in Australia.

Approx 20 hours of navigation training at $225.00 per hour (Cherokee 180)$4500.00
Books, maps, charts etc$400.00
Exam fees, flight test & licence issue$500.00
G.F.P.T. cost (estimated, outlined above)$4184.00
